Cold wave grips north, northwest India, mercury reaches 1.8 in Delhi
The national capital Delhi along with the entire North India is in the grip of severe cold. The plains are freezing because of the snowfall on the mountains. According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhi’s Ayanagar recorded the lowest temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius on Friday morning. It was 3.3 degree Celsius at Ridge and 3.8 degree Celsius at Lodhi Road. There was definitely some improvement in the fog as compared to Thursday. Ayanagar recorded 2.2, Lodhi Road and Ridge recorded a minimum temperature of 2.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday. According to senior meteorologist RK Jainmani, Delhi’s average minimum temperature on Friday increased by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius (3 degrees Celsius less than normal) from a day earlier, but at many places the temperature came down. Visibility levels were recorded up to 200 meters today. The air quality of Delhi-NCR is still in the ‘very poor’ category. The minimum temperature in Delhi is likely to remain below 4 degrees Celsius till Saturday. The country’s capital Delhi remained colder than Dalhousie, Shimla and Kangra of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. Delhi’s minimum temperature touched 3 degrees Celsius, while it was recorded at 2.2 to 2.8 degrees Celsius at three places. Dalhousie recorded a minimum temperature of 4.9 degrees Celsius, Dharamsala 5.2 degrees Celsius, Kangra 3.2 degrees Celsius, Shimla 3.7 degrees Celsius, Dehradun 4.6 degrees Celsius, Mussoorie 4.4 degrees Celsius and Nainital 4.4 degrees Celsius. According to Mahesh Palawat, vice-president (meteorology and climate change) of Skymet Weather, the snowfall that has occurred in the mountains till the new year, the coolness of the same through the northwest winds is making Delhi cold. The cold day situation will continue for two days now. Two restaurant workers were killed and two others were injured when their motorbike was reportedly hit by a truck early Thursday owing to poor visibility due to fog, according to authorities. The four workers, all under the age of 25, were riding on the same motorbike when the incident occurred at 1 a.m. outside the Advant building within the Expressway police station borders, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Ashutosh Dwivedi. According to the authorities, two workers, Bhawna (19) and Shobhit (23), perished, while the other two, Kaushalendra alias Kaushal and Sonu, were hospitalized, HS reported. The vehicle, which was filled with furniture, was confiscated, and the driver was detained, according to police. “An underpass near the Advant Building is being built. The canter truck looks to have lost control owing to the fog and low vision at night. The vehicle first hit a concrete structure and then slammed into a motorbike carrying four persons,” Dwivedi explained. “Two persons died, and two others were sent to Sharda Hospital for treatment. We have talked with the injured and engaged with doctors to ensure that the finest treatment is offered to those who have been hurt,” he added. The additional DCP stated that the Delhi-registered canter vehicle had been seized. The truck’s driver, Arun Pratap, left the scene following the incident but was apprehended by police on Thursday afternoon. According to the police, a FIR has been filed in the case at the Expressway police station, and subsequent legal actions are being carried out. Impacts on Transport and Aviation Severe cold wave conditions may affect some airports, highways and railway routes in the areas of met- sub-division. Difficult driving conditions with slower journey times are affecting traffic in many parts of the country. Some road traffic collisions may also occur if proper care is not taken.
